Impact Center Story

Sri Lanka is grappling with a growing plastic crisis. Due to weak policies and the widespread availability of plastic, it has become ingrained in the daily lives of most citizens. Plastic pollution is choking the environment, endangering marine life, and contributing to climate change. The hospitality industry, in particular, has been a major contributor to single-use plastic waste. Meanwhile, the demand for plastic alternatives, especially from eco-conscious international travelers, is rising. Yet, despite this growing demand, there is a lack of centralized support and coordination for the production and distribution of sustainable alternatives.

This crisis has also severely impacted local artisans, with over 25,000 craftspeople losing their market share to cheaper, mass-produced plastic items. Entire communities that once thrived on crafting eco-friendly products like bamboo, cane, and reed goods are now struggling to survive

Our Solution: The ZeroPlastic Movement

At ZeroPlastic, we’ve taken a proactive approach to combat this problem by working to reduce plastic usage while empowering local artisans and promoting eco-friendly alternatives. Through our online platform and ZeroPlastic Clubs spread across the country, we are addressing the plastic crisis from multiple angles.

  • Empowering Artisans Digitally: We provide a platform for over 120 micro and small-scale entrepreneurs, helping them showcase their plastic alternatives and connect directly with industries like tourism and hospitality.
  • Promoting Eco-Friendly Products: Our platform highlights sustainable, artisan-crafted products—such as bamboo, cane, and reed goods—that can replace single-use plastic items in sectors like tourism and hospitality.
  • Supporting the Hospitality Industry’s Shift: As the hospitality industry moves away from plastic, ZeroPlastic is connecting hotels, restaurants, and businesses with artisans who offer plastic-free alternatives. This shift is crucial as Sri Lanka expects over 2 million tourists this year, many of whom demand eco-friendly options.
  • Local Clubs for Grassroots Action: ZeroPlastic Clubs serve as community hubs, providing artisans and locals with access to resources, training, and networking opportunities. These clubs also host workshops and events aimed at educating the public about plastic alternatives and sustainable living.
  • Tourism Integration: Our work aligns with the growing demand for eco-conscious tourism. Through ZeroPlastic, tourists can explore sustainable products, participate in crafting workshops, and support local artisans, making their visit more meaningful and impactful.
  • Comprehensive Climate Action: By reducing plastic consumption, we are contributing to the global fight against climate change. Fewer plastic products mean lower carbon emissions, less pollution, and a significant reduction in waste that harms marine life and ecosystems.
